RAL DESIGN SYSTEM plus

Every year, the colours of the trend report are part of the RAL DESIGN SYSTEM plus. The RAL DESIGN SYSTEM plus is a colour system that contains a total of 1,825 finely graded nuances. It is based on the internationally known CIELab system. The colours are sorted into 39 colour ranges plus a grey axis and the dimensions brightness and chroma.

Each nuance is standardised and is clearly identified by a 7-digit RAL code and a colour name. The colour code indicates the position of the colour in the colour system: the first three digits stand for the colour range. The scale ranges from 000 for the colours on the grey axis to 360 for berry and pink tones. The fourth and fifth numbers indicate the brightness. Low values reflect dark and high values light tones. The last two digits represent the chromaticity. Low values correspond to little saturation and high values to high saturation. For example, RAL 260 30 35 Royal Blue is a shade of blue that is relatively dark and strong.

The colour system is ideal for professional colour application and facilitates the creative process as well as colour communication.
